PenFed Partners with Northwest Battle Buddies to Raise Service Dog to Support a Veteran
EUGENE, Ore. March 18, 2019 - PenFed Credit Union today announced the launch of a new partnership with Northwest Battle Buddies (NWBB), a Washington state non-profit that selects and trains service dogs for veterans with PTSD. PenFed’s Eugene Financial Service Center in Oregon welcomed a new canine member, Journey, to the team at a company breakfast where he met his new team members.
“We couldn’t be more delighted to welcome Journey to the PenFed family,” said Dave Silvey, Senior Vice President, Regional Financial Service Center. “He and other service dogs like him play a critical role in helping veterans with PTSD heal and recover. Northwest Battle Buddies is doing remarkable work serving those who have risked their lives to protect our freedoms, and we’re delighted to partner with them to support veterans.”
PenFed donated $25,000 to NWBB this year to cover all costs associated with training Journey to become a service dog. Last year, PenFed employees selected NWBB to receive a $12,500 donation as part of the service center’s quarterly community charitable donations campaign.
Tap Bowman, Director of Operations at the PenFed Credit Union Eugene Financial Service Center, has volunteered to raise and train Journey over the next year. In addition to bringing the dog to the office, he will focus on teaching Journey basic commands and socialization skills. At the end of this period, the dog will be returned to NWBB where he’ll go through seven months of professional training to become a service dog. Tap and Journey participated in the NWBB’s 8th Annual Freedom Gala on Saturday, March 16.
“I’m so excited that Journey will be joining the PenFed team,” said Bowman. “PenFed Eugene is proud to support raising a service dog and help an organization whose mission we wholeheartedly support. Journey is going to greatly impact the life of a Veteran for years to come by helping him or her regain freedom and independence.”
PenFed’s partnership with NWBB is just one of its many initiatives and services supporting the military community. Founded as the War Department Credit Union in 1935, the organization has a long history of helping members of our military and their families achieve financial security and success. Over the last year, PenFed has been raising two other dogs to assist people with disabilities and plans to begin raising two more dogs this year.
“Northwest Battle Buddies is grateful for PenFed’s support and partnership in raising Journey – and its employees are embracing the service dog raising mission with incredible passion,” said Shannon Walker, Founder and CEO of Northwest Battle Buddies. “PenFed is an amazing community partner and like Northwest Battle Buddies, the company is truly committed to improving the lives of Veterans.”
