Q1 ESC Charity Checks 2018

Eugene, Ore., July 2, 2018– PenFed Credit Union’s Eugene Service Center today announced charitable donations totaling $25,000 to three local organizations: A Family for Every Child, Greenhill Humane Society, and Womenspace.

These donations are a part of PenFed Credit Union’s quarterly commitment to donate $100,000 this year to local nonprofit organizations in Eugene. Each quarter, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center employees select local charities that align with the core values of the credit union of giving back and making a difference in its communities.

“Our local charitable giving program has really been a tremendous hit at our service center,” said PenFed’s Senior Vice President of Operations Dave Silvey who manages the Eugene Service Center. “It’s a wonderful way for our employees to give back to our community. The enthusiasm shown by our employees each quarter when they collectively nominate and conduct a final vote for charitable organizations in our community they wish to support, has been exciting to watch.”

On June 26, PenFed leadership and employees gathered outside the Eugene Service Center to meet and present the first donation check to Event and Heart Gallery Coordinator Aurora Sherman with A Family for Every Child (AFFEC), a local non-profit that focuses on finding permanent and loving adoptive homes for all waiting children. “Independent donations like PenFed’s is what makes it possible to find forever families for the children waiting in foster care. This donation will go towards supporting our 13 programs,” said Sherman.

PenFed employees visited Greenhill Humane Society for the second check presentation ceremony where they met Executive Director Cary Lieberman, staff, and volunteers. During the visit, the group received a tour of the facility and had an opportunity to socialize with the animals currently available for adoption. “I was grateful to hear that PenFed employees nominated Greenhill Humane Society. This gift will go to help the animals at our shelter. We care for over 3,000 animals a year and rely on donations to support the work we do,” said Lieberman.

Womenspace, a local nonprofit that services victims and survivors of domestic violence, was the third charity selected by PenFed employees to receive a check donation. Development Director Kimberly Lax and Communications Director Corinne Boyer both with Womenspace expressed how honored they were that PenFed employees chose to donate to their organization.

“Womenspace has been providing safety, hope and healing to survivors of domestic violence since 1977. Although we began as a shelter, today we also operate a 24-hour crisis line, provide support services at our crisis and support center and in our rural offices in both English and Spanish, and host several support groups for survivors of domestic violence. We also provide childcare for survivors who attend our support groups. Womenspace employees and volunteers answer more than 3,000 calls every year, and in 2017, we delivered 114 educational presentations to more than 2,400 students. Thank you for choosing to donate to Womenspace,” said Boyer.

Since opening the service center in Eugene in 1996, PenFed has supported local veteran and community organizations and, since 2009, more than 1,400 hours in volunteer time to charitable organizations throughout Lane County. These community organizations include: United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Food for Lane County, The Eugene Mission, Lane Blood Center, First Place Family Center, Lane County Animal Shelter, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Of Lane County, Northwest Battle Buddies, and White Bird Clinic.

The Eugene, Oregon service center began with 24 employees and today, the Tysons, Va.-based credit union, employs 495 people, locally. The service center serves 1.7 million PenFed members worldwide.
