EUGENE, Ore., June 19, 2019 – PenFed Credit Union’s Eugene Service Center today announced their second quarter charitable donations totaling $27,500 to Bridgeway House, Cascades Raptor Center, Hearts for Hospice, and Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP). PenFed employees met with the charities and presented them with checks.

These donations are part of PenFed’s commitment to giving $100,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Eugene area this year. Each quarter, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center employees select local charities that align with the credit union’s core values of giving back and making a difference in the communities PenFed serves.

“On behalf of the PenFed employees at the Eugene Service Center, we are proud to give back to our community through these employee-selected, charitable donations,” said PenFed’s Senior Vice President of Operations Chris Martin, who manages the Eugene Service Center. “Our employees always come away inspired by the important functions these agencies serve in our community. It is truly a gift to be able to give back in this way.”

For the first presentation, PenFed employees traveled to Bridgeway House, a charitable, nonprofit that serves the needs of children with autism. During the visit, employees met with Bridgeway House Executive Director Patricia Wigney. The group toured the Bridgeway School classrooms and grounds, and had an opportunity to meet students. Bridgeway House offers treatments, developmental therapies, enrichment courses, and support to children and families of all income levels affected by autism and related abilities.

Hearts for Hospice was the second charitable organization selected by PenFed employees this quarter. The organization supports local hospice and palliative care services, end-of-life education, and grief programs for children and adults in Lane County. Hearts for Hospice Board of Directors President Barbara Jacobs and Treasurer Betty Hemmingsen met with PenFed employees at the Eugene Service Center. During this time, employees were able to learn more about the organization and possible volunteer opportunities.

For the third donation presentation, the Eugene team met Sleep In Heavenly Peace President Connie Jonas and several of the organization’s volunteers. Sleep In Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.

During the gathering, PenFed employees were able to learn more about the organization’s mission statement and donation needs. Additionally, PenFed employees volunteered for the SHP Eugene Chapter’s nationwide Bunks Across America community event on June 15. PenFed employees teamed up with SHP to help build over 68 bunk beds to ensure no kid sleeps on the floor in Lane County!

“Thank you to PenFed for helping make more children’s dreams of having their very own bed a reality. PenFed’s donation to Sleep In Heavenly Peace Eugene will help get 58 kids off the floor in our community,” said Jonas. “PenFed is now part of the SHP Family and we look forward to working together for many builds to come.”

For the final presentation, PenFed employees visited the Cascades Raptor Center, where they met with Executive Director Louisa Shimmel, staff and volunteers. During the visit, the group toured the grounds and received a presentation from the Center’s bird curators, who introduced the group to two resident birds of prey—Dmitri, a Eurasian Eagle-owl, and Puck, an American Kestrel.

The Cascades Raptor Center has one of the largest collections of native raptor species in the Pacific Northwest. Through wildlife rehabilitation and public education, the Cascades Raptor Center fosters a connection between people and birds of prey.

“Cascades Raptor Center is so grateful for this generous contribution from PenFed,” said Shimmel. “We love being in service to our community—human and wild—and appreciate it so much when our community appreciates the work that we do.”

PenFed has supported local Eugene veteran and community organizations since opening its Eugene Regional Financial Service Center in 1996 and has contributed more than 1,845 hours in volunteer time to charitable organizations in Lane County. The regional financial service center serves 1.7 million PenFed members worldwide.
