PenFed Credit Union Gives Back to Eugene Charitable Organizations
EUGENE, Ore., Oct. 25, 2018 – PenFed Credit Union’s Eugene Service Center today announced charitable donations totaling $25,000 to Boys and Girls Clubs of Emerald Valley (BGCEV), FOOD for Lane County (FFLC), Pro-Bone-O, and Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS). PenFed employees and leadership met with each of the organizations and presented them with checks earlier this month.
These donations are part of PenFed’s commitment to giving $100,000 to nonprofit organizations this year. Each quarter, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center employees select local charities that align with the credit union’s core values of giving back and making a difference in the communities it serves.
“The entire Eugene Service Center team is always so energized when we meet with these charitable organizations and have the opportunity to learn more about what they do for our community,” said PenFed’s Senior Vice President of Operations Dave Silvey, who manages the Eugene Service Center. “We at PenFed are all so proud of the communities we live in and serve as a financial institution. Therefore, it is a pleasure to extend these donations to these organizations that make such a profound impact on the lives of others, and who help make Lane County a better place to live for everyone.”
PenFed leadership and employees traveled to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Emerald Valley facility where they met CEO and Executive Director Aaron Haack of BGCEV, support staff, and volunteers. During the visit, the group received a tour of the Club facilities and had an opportunity to socialize with several of the kids who were onsite participating in Club activities that day.
“This donation from PenFed was an absolute surprise for our Club and members,” said Haack. “With this donation we will be able to take Club members on field trips, purchase program supplies, and so much more.”
PenFed employees also presented a donation check to FOOD for Lane County during a visit to their distribution warehouse. FOOD for Lane County is a nonprofit food bank dedicated to alleviating hunger by creating access to food. The organization accomplishes this by soliciting, collecting, rescuing, growing, preparing and packaging food for distribution through a network of more than 150 partner agencies and distribution sites.
“In Lane County, 37% of our residents qualify for emergency food boxes, and thanks to the generosity of PenFed, we are able to provide over 22,000 meals to our community members in need. It’s the support and dedication of organizations like PenFed that make Lane County such a wonderful place to live,” said FFLC’s Corporate Relations Manager Hadee Sabzalian.
Pro-Bone-O is Lane County’s only nonprofit solely dedicated to providing free veterinary services, food, and supplies for the pets of homeless people in the community, and was the third charitable organization selected by PenFed employees to receive a check donation. Pro-Bone-O Treasurer Elizabeth Spannuth and Board Member Richie Powell met with PenFed employees at the Eugene Service Center to receive the donation check. During this time, employees had the opportunity to speak with the representatives and hear more about their outreach efforts and volunteer opportunities with the organization.
“We, at Pro-Bone-O Veterinary Care, are so very appreciative of our friends at PenFed for their generous donation. Pro-Bone-O is a volunteer-run nonprofit and relies 100% on community donations and fundraising. So far, in 2018 we have provided veterinary care to over 1,000 animals. We believe in the positive benefits that pets provide their owners; your donation is not only helping the animal, but you are also helping the owner live a happier and healthier life,” said Pro-Bone-O Board Member and Fundraising Chair Catrina R. Mathewson.
SASS Executive Director BB Beltran and Trafficking Intervention Coordinator Tamara LeRoy visited the Eugene Service Center and received a donation check from employees and leadership. SASS advocates listen, believe, support, accompany, offer information and referrals, and provide peer counseling to survivors of assault, past and present.
“SASS has assisted survivors of sexual assault, and their families, since 1991. Through generous donations such as this one from PenFed, agencies such as Sexual Assault Support Services are able to continue the mission to provide advocacy and information to people of Lane County who have experienced sexual assault at some point in their lives," said SASS Finance Director Ann Mortenson.
Since opening the service center in Eugene in 1996, PenFed has supported local veteran and community organizations. Since 2009, PenFed has contributed more than 1,544 hours in volunteer time to charitable organizations throughout Lane County. The Eugene Service Center began with 24 employees. Today, the Tysons, Va.-based credit union employs 496 in Oregon. The service center serves 1.7 million PenFed members worldwide.
