What are Card Security Text Alerts?

Introducing Card Security Text Alerts 

PenFed is committed to providing our members with the latest fraud fighting technology. We are excited to offer Card Security Text Alerts on our Visa and MasterCard credit and debit card products.

This new tool provides you with a text message, if or when, a potentially suspicious transaction should occur. You can quickly respond with a text message to validate the transaction, or alert us if there is unauthorized activity on your account.

What are Card Security Text Alerts used for?

PenFed Card Security monitors card activity to identify transactions that may be fraud. Card Security Text Alerts are one way to notify members of a suspect transaction. 

At the time you enroll in the service, you will provide us with your mobile phone number. Once enrollment is complete, PenFed will text you, if or when, a suspect transaction or series of transactions occur.

You will have the ability to immediately respond with ‘Yes – this is Fraud’ or ‘No – this isn’t Fraud’ and PenFed will then take the appropriate action.

How do the text messages work?  

  • A text message will be sent to your mobile device when there is a suspicious transaction on your card.
  • Simply reply to confirm whether or not you recognize the transaction(s).
  • If you do not recognize the transaction(s), you will receive a text response asking you to close the card by calling Fraud Detection at 1-888-918-7313. A block will be placed on the card immediately to protect you from further fraudulent activity. The block will remain in place until we hear from you.
  • If you reply that you recognize the transaction(s), your card will remain available for use.

Is there a fee to use Card Security Text Alerts?

PenFed does not assess a fee for the service. However, if you do elect to receive Card Security Text Alerts, standard text message and data rates assessed by your mobile carrier will apply. Please check with your mobile carrier to ensure that you have 'text messaging' on your mobile phone plan, and that you are aware of the costs your carrier will charge you if you utilize it.

What happens if my Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card is lost or stolen?

If your Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card is lost or stolen and a replacement is issued, you will need to re-register the new account number to continue receiving text messages.

If my mobile phone number changes, what do I need to do?

You will need to re-register the account with the new phone number.

What carriers currently participate in this service?

T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, Interop-Appalachian Wireless, US Cellular Corp®, Cincinnati Bell, Boost Mobile, Cricket Communications, Virgin Mobile USA, and ALLTEL Communications Inc.

What if I do not have text messaging?

Text messaging is required for this service. If your mobile phone is able to send and receive text messages but you do not subscribe to this service, you will need to contact your mobile phone provider to add a text messaging feature to your phone plan.

If I am traveling outside of the U.S. can I receive text message alerts?

To receive Card Security Fraud Alerts in a foreign country you will need to have the following:

  • You will need to have a U.S. phone number
  • Your carrier must support foreign text message delivery
  • And the country you are traveling in will need to be a part of the Global System for Mobile Network

Are the text commands case-sensitive?

No. Commands can be sent as upper-case, lower-case, or a mixture of both.

Can I add multiple phone numbers? 

No. You can only enroll one mobile number per account.

Why do I receive multiple messages with Pg1/2, Pg2/2?

Text messages are unique in that they can only hold 160 characters. Some commands require multiple messages to provide all of the necessary information.

Are Card Security Text Alerts safe and secure?

Yes. Our first priority is to protect your personal information. We will never ask for your account number, personal identification, or other personal information. If you ever receive a text message asking for this information, please do not respond.

How can I be sure the text message I received is from PenFed Card Security?

The PenFed Card Security Alert Text Alert will be issued from the short code 72488. Only respond to a Card Security Text Alert if you have enrolled in the program and the short code used is 72488.

How do I unsubscribe from Card Security Text Alerts?

To unsubscribe from Card Security Text Alerts, text STOP to 72488. You will then receive an opt-out confirmation. 

Why did I receive a “change” confirmation alert when I did not make an update to my account?

If you received a “change” alert for an update that you did not make to your account, and no one else is authorized to make changes to your account, please contact a PenFed Member Service Representative at 1-800-247-5626.

What information will you need to enroll and register your PenFed Visa/MasterCard credit or debit card? 

You will need the following to complete your enrollment:

  • Mobile Phone Number
  • Complete Card Account Number
  • Card Security Code (usually 3 digits on the back of the card)
  • Card Expiration Date
  • Zip Code (what is shown on your card statement under billing address)
  • Last four-digits of the Primary cardholder's Social Security Number

Is my PenFed Premium Travel Rewards American Express or PenFed Defender American Express Card eligible for enrollment?

No. At this time, only Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards are eligible to receive Card Security Text Alerts.
